Evaluating a Program’s Free Software Licensing

Being able to take a random program from the Internet and be confident whether it is free software or not, solely based on the available documentation within the program’ s source code, is a useful skill. (This is not legal advice and Craig is not a lawyer.) This workshop involves walking the participants through the evaluation process of a computer program’ s licensing in order to determine if it is eligible for entry in the Free Software Foundation’s Free Software Directory.

Craig Topham came to work for the Free Software Foundation at the end of 2018. Besides hosting the weekly Friday Free Software Directory meeting on libera.chat #fsf from 12:00-15:00 Eastern Time, some of Craig’s FSF duties include: handling copyright assignments, GPL compliance for FSF-copyrighted works, and helping with the “Respect Your Freedom” program. As well as the desire to see free software thrive, Craig also envisions a world where everyone’s inner light shines brightly.
