DESCRIPTION:Police accountability requires transparency\, but access to rel
evant information is frequently hindered by collaborators in government or
the police themselves. Fortunately there is one source of info we can tak
e into our own hands: their radios. Police in the United States largely us
e the digital\, trunked radio system “Project 25.” We can listen in to
this using spare computers\, a few Software Defined Radios (SDRs)\, and o
pen source software. Even better\, we can go far beyond what very simple b
roadcastify-style dispatch streams offer\, like having our own archives of
radio traffic. Based on an actual system that sees real-world use\, this
talk will cover how to set up your very own DIY police scanner. Ansible pl
aybooks and supporting scripts to streamline the process will be released\
, and practical tips and lessons for real-world applications of such a sys
 tem will be covered.
